Observations of Academic English Program
This paper was originally written for a course in E 515 Syntax for EFL/ESL 2012 Spring. I observed six grammar classes related to Syntax at the Academic English Program (AEP) at INTO CSU. This observation paper included detailed descriptions and my
comments on each lesson. Through observations of three different levels of classes: basic, intermediate, advanced, I experienced how grammar points that I learned from Syntax course were presented and taught in actual EFL/ESL classes by skilled AEP teachers.
I realized that a method and range of knowledge of teaching grammar points should be designed differently depending on aims of the lesson and learners' level. Instead of sticking to certain methods, a variety of teaching methods should be used according to the aims of the lesson and learners' language proficiency level. Additionally, I learned that grammar should be taught in an integrative way for enhancing communicative competence rather than grammar for grammar's sake.
