The International Night at the Library
The International Night at the Library is one of the programs provided by the Fort Collins International Center (FCIC) and sponsored by the Poudre River Library District. FCIC is a volunteer organization for people who want to share the diverse culture of the world. The International Night at the Library provides an opportunity to experience diverse international culture. The presentations were by students and community members from USA and abroad.
Since I came to Fort Collins, I have been interested in the International Night at the Library. I attended Korea Night, Uganda Night, Nepal Night, Iran Night, China Night, Burma Night and Guatemala Night. It was a valuable experience to listen to the world of different cultures. My first International Night was Korea night on Aug. Jun, 2012, and the presentation was by an American who travelled to Korea for two weeks. Hearing about my country from an American traveller was interesting and I had thought about Korea with an objective viewpoint. On that night, I met a veteran who joined in the Korean War in 1950. He had such a good memory about Korea and still kept Korea as his second home country. He and I were pleased to talk about the past and future of Korea.
While listening to the International Night presentation, I wanted to introduce Korea to those who are interested in Korea. Jee Eun, my Korean classmate, and I applied for the International Night and we presented it at the Main Library on May 14, 2013.
We introduced Korea including history, industry, culture, attractions, language, food and people in a dynamic and fun way. My main presentation was an in-depth view of the Korean education system, providing a good chance for the audience to learn about and discuss Korean education. In addition, I taught some basic Korean language. Overall, we provided useful and practical information about Korea. I met the veteran again in the presentation. He brought an old picture of Korea and was happy to share his experience in Korea with me. I felt as if I were a Korean culture ambassador. It was meaningful to introduce Korea and to share ideas, knowledge and experience about Korea with the audience who was interested in Korea.
