The Value of Bilingualism in Korea
This paper was written for the course E507 Studies in Bilingualism, Bilingual and Multilingual Education for TESOL Professionals as an alternative mid-term test. I learned about concepts and importance of bilingualism and thought about the
implementation of bilingualism education from this course. Bilingualism is one of the current issues in the globalized world and many types of bilingual education are implemented in the world. In the case of Korea, there is an increasing number of multi-ethnic people who need bilingual education. Nevertheless, little attention is paid to bilingualism. The only interest of language education policy makers is English language education; they do not seem to be aware of the importance of bilngualism.
I have reviewed the benefits and values of bilingualism in society, critically analyzed bilingualism in Korea and offered some suggestions. I hope Korean education policy makers would have more interests in bilingualism as I suggested in the paper and the Korean government should take more aggressive measures by providing appropriate bilingual programs to embrace the increasing multi-ethnic families living in Korea with different language and culture.
