Human Subjects Protection Training
I attended the Human Subjects Protection Training Session offered by Institutional Review Board (IRB) in conjunction with the Research Integrity & Compliance Review Office (RICRO) on May, 2012. It was a seminar by CSU’s IRB for CSU researchers. Though I did not plan to conduct a research project for my Master’s thesis, research involving human subjects was one of my
interests.
The training included the history of human subject protection, ethics and federal regulations about research, and CSU procedures about protecting human subjects in research. I didn’t know about IRB review until I got this training. Through the training, I was able to understand clearly human research including responsibility to participants and IRB review process. I learned that I should respect participants’ right and privacy to research with volunteers.
I took Classroom-based Research in TEFL/TESL during 2013 Spring and the professor of the course required that I complete IRB training. I agreed that IRB training should be done before taking the course. Conducting a classroom-based research project as one of the course requirements did not need to be reviewed by the IRB, because evaluation of a classroom curriculum was not considered research. My project was to investigate INTO CSU students’ views and perceptions about native English speaking teachers and non-native English speaking teachers. Sixteen INTO CSU students participated in an online-survey. If I had researched for publication, the project would have required IRB review and approval. I learned the IRB review and application process and fundamental principles through this training: Human subjects should be respected in any case.
