Stories of Cultural Differences and Adjustment
This collaborative project was completed for my class in E526 Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language. The task was field-based literacy project for ELLs. By performing this project, I had an opportunity to get directly involved with ELLs' literacy and apply what I learned from the E526 course. Literacy in our project was confined to written literacy. The project subjects were five Korean ELLs. The project product was designed for teachers who are in charge of EFL/ESL students at school. It was expected to contribute to the understanding of Korean EFL/ESL learners at each school. The project was based on the assumption that five ELLs faced unexpected problems in learning, communicating and socializing in a different situation from Korea. Our project focused on differences in their school life with the aim of improving cultural awareness between Korean EFL students and the Fort Collins school community. This project gave me an opportunity to understand and experience Korean ELLs and inspiration on how to cope with their written literacy problems. Additionally, I successfully showcased our project to the class by oral poster presentation of the collaborative project after completing the project, and learned about poster presentation skills as well. Below are the links to (1) a booklet of the project product (2) a poster for the project and (3) a handout for the project. Each link provides more details about the field-based literacy project I completed. |
