Analysis of English Liquids /r/ and /l/ for Teaching Korean EFL Learners
This paper was originally written for the course E512 Phonology and Morphology. While English liquids /r/ and /l/ are two separate phonemes as in rice/lice, right/light, pray/play, there is only one consonant that is more similar to /l/ in Korean to represent English /r/ and /l/. As a result, English liquids /r/ and /l/ are one of the most difficult sounds for Korean EFL learners. Therefore, it is regarded as valuable to describe and analyze /r/ and /l/ because it can help Korean EFL teachers to teach students how to identify and produce /r/ and /l/ precisely.
