This is my first demonstration lesson I taught for teaching practicum. The lesson plan was made using the SIOP model and I tried to include substantial aspects of the SIOP in it and to implement the lesson effectively. Reviewing the SIOP model, I realized that the model is a collection of the most efficient teaching factors leading to an effective and efficient teaching from setting up content and language objectives through lesson delivery to review and assessment.
I used the movie film My Big Fat Greek Wedding in planning and implementing the first practice teaching. The movie contains many features about cultural differences between Greeks and Americans, so it includes many useful and educational content and language aspects. Additionally, I tried to make a lesson plan encouraging learners' integrative language skills using the film. I looked forwarded to learners comparing the cultural differences between Greeks and Americans based on the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding in terms of content. In addition, I planned for learners to have an opportunity to practice authentic functions such as convincing parents to consent to marriage based on the movie plot.
Thanks to my lesson plan coach, I was able to improve my teaching plan and implement it more successfully than I originally planned. However, I had experienced time management problem in implementing the lesson, so I rushed the assessment at the end of the lesson. I realized the importance of lesson delivery pace and overall time management from the first teaching practicum. The first teaching practicum was valuable as well as useful since it gave me an opportunity to use and implement the SIOP model in an actual class and reflect on my teaching.
Below are my first teaching practicum lesson plan, and a link to teaching material (PPT), three evaluations from an instructor, an evaluator and an observer, respectively after delivering the lesson and the post-teaching reflection on practice teaching as a teacher, coach and evaluator.
