Test Review
This test review paper was written for E634 Assessing Second Language Skills. I reviewed standardized English proficiency tests: TOEFL iBT, IELTS and PTE (Pearson Test of English) Academic tests. Through reviewing these three English language proficiency tests that are taken worldwide, I learned about English language proficiency tests with regards to purpose,
structure, scoring, and evidence of reliability and validity of each test. In addition, through reviewing the statistics such as mean, standard deviation (SD), and standard error of measurement (SEM) of each test, I had an opportunity to apply what I learned in the course.
Though PTE Academic is less popular in Korea, TOEFL iBT and IELTS are well-known standardized English proficiency tests for Koreans who want to study in an English speaking country. I find it worthwhile to review these tests in that the effect of those tests has a great impact on Korean students because the results decide admissions to universities. These English language proficiency tests are used to make high-stakes decisions, so it is noted that especially ELL teachers need to analyze each test with a professional view. In this review, I set limits to the context to those who are preparing for TEFL/TESL MA programs. I compared these three tests in terms of the purpose, the structure, the item types, the scoring, the statistics such as mean, SD, SEM and the reliability and validity of each test. Though all three tests are good enough in each aspect, I have concluded that IELTS would be best for Korean test takers who prepare for TEFL/TESL MA programs, considering the target population.
It was meaningful and valuable to review these English language proficiency tests. It enabled me to apply the contents that I have studied in the course as well as to analyze the tests with a more professional and critical view.
