2012 Summer Conference on Learning, Teaching, and Critical Thinking
I attended the conference on Learning, Teaching, and Critical Thinking offered by The Institute for Learning and Teaching (TILT) on May 16, 2012. The conference theme was "Using Problem-based, Integrative Learning to Support Student Engagement and Critical Thinking".
The keynote address was by Dr. Stephen A. Bernhardt of the University of Delaware. He lectured on Problem-based Learning: Why and How? Through his lecture, I learned more about the process of problem-based learning (PBL): presentation of problem ->organize ideas and prior knowledge ->pose question -> assign responsibility for questions; discuss resources ->research questions ->reconvene; report on research ->integrate new information; refine questions ->resolution of problem.
We need not only English proficiency, but also the ability to communicate and cooperate with each other in order to be
successful EFL/ESL teachers. Dr. Bernhardt showed how to develop students' ability to define problems and develop solutions through a real case of PBL course as an undergraduate. The conference made me aware of the importance of PBL and the teacher's role for successful PBL. I'll integrate the process of PBL with English language class for students to solve proposed English related problems. In other words, English learning task can be applied to a problem solving process in order to fulfill learning goals. I will set up appropriate learning goals, relevant problems and provide enough information for learners to solve proposed problems.
I attended two more sessions: Writing Across the Curriculum as a Mode of Integrative Learning and Technology-based Approaches to Integrative Learning : Libraries, Technology, and Learning. As an EFL/ESL teacher, I realized that English should be taught to develop four language skills in an integrative way for learners' commnunicative competence in a real-world setting. EFL/ESL teachers should also use necessary technology for their teaching and teach students how to use technology for their learning in a digitalized world.
