Conversation Partner
The Conversation Partner program was a volunteer program provided by INTO CSU Academic English Program (AEP). The majority of AEP students attended AEP to prepare for undergraduate and graduate study at CSU. I volunteered for Conversation Partner for four sessions during 2012 Spring and 2012 Fall. Through the volunteer program, I met new people with diverse cultures and helped AEP students with their listening and speaking skills.
The experience as a conversation partner was helpful for me as well as AEP students. It gave me an opportunity to develop myself as an EFL teacher because I observed the language usages of EFL learners from different countries. I could observe the students' language use such as, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation while communicating with them. Unlike a typical observation class where I sit quietly at the back of the classroom, I communicated with them in more natural language use environments. In addition, sharing new cultures with AEP learners was another pleasure and I believed that the experiences would contribute to my future teaching.
Below is a reflection on my participation in the Conversation Partner program.
