Review of English Dictionaries
This paper was written for the course E 514 Phonology and Morphology for ESL/EFL. I compared and contrasted two English dictionaries to provide descriptions of each dictionary. I chose the Longman Dictionary of American English (LDAE), designed for intermediate English learners, and the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (AHD) for native speakers. Each dictionary was examined in terms of the range of contents, the entries, senses and meanings, connontational meanings, collocational information, expressions related to the headword, fixed expressions, controversial usage issues and databases.
After reviewing each dictionary, I found differences between a English learners' dictionary and a native speakers' dictionary. I concluded that the AHD is appropriate for native speakers because of the in-depth lexical information of each entry with additional relevant information and the LDAE was appropriate for Korean EFL intermediate high school students thanks to its authentic, necessary, and clear language information. This review helps me have a critical and expert view about choosing a dictionary appropriate for different users. I had an opportunity to apply knowledge about phonology and morphology in reviewing the two dictionaries.
